Canon S95 Digital Camera SD Card

If you spend $399 on a digital camera, you pretty much expect to take photos with it out of the box, right? After all, there is no film in a digital camera.

But no, the bean counters at Canon cameras think like they did 20 years ago when they sold SLR cameras that took 35mm film.

You see, back then, you had to buy the film AND the camera.

I just purchased a Canon S95 digital camera only to find out that out of the box you can't take a photo. See what it says in the photo? No Memory Card

Give me a break. How much would a 4GB SD card cost Canon if they were buying them say 50,000 at a time? Two dollars, maybe even three?

For goodness sakes, you would think they would want really happy customers that could take photos once the battery was charged. But no, Canon wants to pinch pennies.

It's insane.

NOTE TO CANON CAMERA MARKETING DEPARTMENT:

Pack an 8GB SD card with each digital camera and CHARGE the customer $5 more so you, Canon, don't suffer.

Idiots.

I have never purchased a digital camera and I have bought 5, none has ever had a memory card with it.

COMMENT BY Tim Carter: That's the point! They should include them because they are so cheap. I don't care that I have to pay for it, just have it in the camera ready to go.

If I want a bigger one, then I can buy that.

Sorry Bob but I have bought a dozen digital cameras over the years and some did come with memory cards, which I immediately threw away. There are a huge variety of card sizes and speeds and a generic card may be fine for a cheap camera but if you are spending $400 then you should be a little more particular. I, for example, want smaller cards that are faster than average. The largest one I have is 2GB because I don't want all my eggs in one basket.

I have to agree with Mike. I've bought plenty of cameras over the years, made by various manufacturers, and film was never included. There are simply too many variations, even with memory cards, to find an inexpensive card that would satisfy most customers.

I stopped trying to make sense of the nonsense. The world is full of jerks, imbeciles, and penny pinchers. ..all 3 together create an ideal company for investors; HP. Be happy that you bought Canon as they have a sense for scaling quality. HP makes junk all around the board..even their top products are absolutely unprepared for market.

I agree with you. However, if they do not include a memory card the box should CLEARLY STATE Memory card NOT INCLUDED, like most battery operated purchases will state "BATTERY NOT INCLUDED" if such is the case.

Have had 3 Canon cameras purchased in Australia, the most recent 6 months ago and they all had memory cards with them. Only a 1 or 2 GB card but it was enough to get you going.

I'm with Bob - who cares if it a less than best card, you want to take pictures straight out of the box. It's a bit like picking up a new car and having no petrol to drive away from the dealership - still looks good but practically useless. I think companies that don't supply a card are pennywise and pound foolish - I went with a brand that did supply a card (quickly replaced) but at least I could play with my new toy straight away.

I shopped forever for just the right first digital camera - Canon. The salesperson at Best Buy did not mention it came w/out a memory card (I was not even sure what that was, but HE most certainly should have known! Night before a long road trip, was reading the directions and could not believe it. No time to go to the store and no time on the trip the next morning. So, I still have not used the camera. I have since heard the same story from a friend. Wouldn't you think a top brand like Canon would not skimp on such an inexpensive, VITALLY NEEDED item? Disappointing.
